{"id":248,"date":"2018-02-14T04:12:39","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T04:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/?page_id=248"},"modified":"2018-02-14T04:17:14","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T04:17:14","slug":"no-freedom-with-racism","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/?page_id=248","title":{"rendered":"No Freedom with Racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">First published on 10\/05\/2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>ESRL asks: Will there ever be freedom from RACISM in employment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year is 2014 and the question employees should be asking is \u201cWhen will we have FREEDOM from Racism?<\/p>\n<p>When the ESRL revisited the last 120 years it found these employment-driven key dates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-242 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/lobengula.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"266\" \/> Chief Lobengula Khumalo was both a major employer of human resources and protector of natural resources in Bulawayo, Matabele, until 1894. This revered employer Chief Lobengula, it is stated, was the most intelligent man in the nation with marvellous memory; and even had sympathies and a soft spot for white missionaries. <strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Well! After various concessions and treaties, Chief <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulawayo1872.com\/history\/lobengula.htm\">Lobengula<\/a> was tricked into signing over his Kingdom and its rich natural resources to the authority of a Mr Cecil John Rhodes.\u00a0 This Mr Cecil Rhodes became the new employer.\u00a0 Chief Lobengula\u2019s experience in the hands of racist employer Mr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulawayo1872.com\/history\/rhodescj.htm\">Cecil John Rhodes<\/a> after 1894 led to the death of Chief Lobengula.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-241 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gandhi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gandhi.jpg 225w, http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gandhi-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/gandhi-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Mahatma Gandhi, a British-trained lawyer faced employment restriction to practice law in Calcutta, India. After a lengthy struggle to overcome the employment barrier he faced, in 1920, Mahatma Gandhi penned the following iconic statement: \u00a0\u201cFirst <em>\u2018they\u2019<\/em> ignore you, then <em>\u2018they\u2019<\/em> laugh at you, then <em>\u2018they\u2019<\/em> fight you, then you win.\u201d\u00a0 Well, to his end of life, Mahatma Gandhi did not practice law.\u00a0 The struggle for an end to racism in employment still continues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-243 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Martin-Luther.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"178\" \/>Martin Luther King\u2019s civil rights march in Washington DC 1963 was about equal rights to and; right to employment for African-Americans. In the heat of the occasion, he said that, to paraphrase \u2018he had a dream that one day people of all colours will work and live together as equals and in freedom. \u00a0Instead of ending racism in employment in USA, well, <em>\u2018they\u2019<\/em> rather killed him and killed the dream of an America in which racism in employment exists no more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-244 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/nelson-Mandela.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"258\" \/>Nelson Mandela, who is our recent icon on fighting for equality in employment, at a racist Azanian court of Johannesburg, in 1964, challenged racist employers on employment rights for the Afrika Person; he said that, to paraphrase, the \u2018&#8230;right to equal employment was an ideal he cherished in a free society in which all persons live in harmony and it is an ideal he was prepared to die for&#8230;\u201d Instead of the racist employers ending racism in employment in Azania, well, \u2018they\u2019 rather denied him martyrdom for the ideal of equal employment by jailing him for 27 long years and succeeded in killing-off sentiments on equality in employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Thus it is that in the footsteps of Chief Lobengula since 1894, Mahatma Gandhi since 1912, Martin Luther King since 1963, and Nelson Mandela since 1964, activists for equality in employment have hoped against hope that racist employers would at least pay some attention to ending racism in employment.\u00a0 Well, globally, racist employment of all resources itself has not shifted.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The UK Government of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II enacted an Equality Act 2010 to persuade employers in the UK to be \u2018sensitive\u2019 to itemised \u201cprotected characteristics\u201d.\u00a0 ESRL notes with regret that 4 years on, do we have to wait for another 116 years to find out if employment will be free of racism?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Alecho-oita, a director at <a href=\"http:\/\/equalitiessensitivityrating.com\/\"><strong>Equalities<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Sensitivity<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Rating<\/strong><\/a> comments as follows;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is very disappointing that in 2014 the employment process as a labour institution that engages different ethnicities to enhance\/advance both their wellbeing and that of society, is still dogged by accusations of racism.\u00a0 Employees, I suspect try to make sense of their employment while weighed down by degrees of subtle or overt racism. \u00a0For them there is no getting away from racism at the workplace. \u00a0It is in recognition of this dilemma that Queen Elizabeth\u2019s government constructed an Equality Act 2010 on \u2018protected characteristics\u2019 to persuade employers to get to grips with racism in employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Editors Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mr Alecho-oita is available for interviews on 0044-798-459-4876 or <a href=\"mailto:jack.a@equalitiessensitivityrating.com\">jack.a@equalitiessensitivityrating.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ESRL can be mailed at <a href=\"mailto:info@equalitiessensitivityrating.com\">info@equalitiessensitivityrating.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Below are sampled sources on the uses of \u2018no freedom from racism in employment\u2019:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>When was the last time you called someone\u00a0<strong>racist<\/strong>to their face?
